The Healing Process: What to Expect After Your PMU Procedure
The Healing Process: What to Expect After Your PMU Procedure
After getting a permanent makeup (PMU) procedure, whether it’s nanoblading, powder brows, lip blushing, or any other service I offer, understanding the healing process is crucial for achieving the best results. Let’s walk through what you can expect in the days and weeks following your procedure.
The Stages of PMU Healing
PMU healing is different from traditional tattoos. Here’s a general timeline of what you might experience:
For Brows:
- Day 1-3: Your brows will gradually darken.
- End of Week 1: As new skin forms over the tattoo, the color may appear faint. This is often called the “ghosting phase.”
- Week 2-4: The pigment will resurface and settle into its final color.
For Lips:
- Day 1: The color will gradually darken.
- Week 1: Surface healing typically completes, with minimal to no peeling if kept moisturized.
- Week 2-4: Pigment settles into its final color.
Remember, healing times can vary from person to person. Some clients may take up to 4 weeks for the color to fully surface and settle.
Common Healing Experiences
Contrary to what you might expect, PMU procedures typically result in:
- Minimal to no swelling
- Rare occurrences of bruising
These procedures are less invasive than traditional tattoos, which contributes to an easier healing process.
Signs of Normal Healing vs. Potential Issues
Normal healing signs include:
- Color changes as described above
- Minimal swelling in the first few hours
- Slight tenderness
Signs that might indicate a problem:
- Excessive swelling or itching
- Any buildup on your brows (which might indicate lymph fluid accumulation)
If you experience any concerning symptoms, please contact me or a healthcare professional immediately.
Aftercare Instructions
To ensure the best results, follow these aftercare guidelines:
- Use the provided aftercare kit, which includes Vitamin A&D ointment for brows and paramedical tattooing, and Blistex for lips.
- Avoid sweating and heavy activities during the healing process.
- Stay out of direct sunlight.
- Don’t apply makeup around the tattooed area until surface healing is complete (usually 1-2 weeks).
- Use only the cleansers provided in your aftercare kit.
- Avoid swimming and scratching the tattoo.
- For 4-6 weeks after the procedure, avoid facials, microdermabrasion, Botox and fillers, and any chemical treatments.
Follow-Up and Touch-Ups
While not every client requires a touch-up, I like to check in with all my clients 2-4 weeks after the procedure. This allows me to:
- Get updates on your healing progress
- Answer any questions you might have
- Schedule a touch-up appointment if necessary
